Around 11:30 Friday night, Charlottesville Police responded to gunshots they heard.

"One of our officers heard shots being fired in the area of Hardy Drive, just moments after we started getting calls from citizens also," Lieutenant Gary Pleasants says.

The officer and witnesses heard between five and seven shots near the 800 block of Hardy Drive.

Police say 23-year-old Curtis Alvin Johnson Jr., a Charlottesville resident, suffered a gunshot wound in the back. Police say Johnson is a Virginia State University student who happened to be home for the weekend.

"As the officer responded he saw a couple vehicles leaving the scene, he got their license plates it turned out one of those vehicles was transporting a shooting victim," Pleasants said.

Johnson was taken to the UVa Medical Center in serious condition.

Police are still investigating the shooting, so far they have not made any arrests.
