Jury Selection Underway In Morva Trial

September 17, 2007

Jury selection is underway in the trial of the escaped inmate accused of killing two men last year in Blacksburg.

William Morva is accused of killing hospital security guard Derrick McFarland, and county Sheriff's Corporal Eric Sutphin. Nine jurors have been selected. Eight prospects were dismissed Monday morning as the trial of Morva began in Montgomery County Circuit Court in Christiansburg. The jury pool totals 100.

Judge Ray Grubbs has set aside two days for jury selection. Prosecutor Brad Finch has said he will seek the death penalty for 25-year-old Morva in the August 2006 slayings.

The police search for Morva prompted Virginia Tech to shut down on the first day of classes last year.
