Former Mary Washington President Convicted Of DUI

September 18, 2007

Former Mary Washington University President William Frawley has been convicted of driving under the influence.

Frawley entered an Alford plea today. That means he did not admit guilt, but acknowledged sufficient evidence exists for a conviction. The conviction means Frawley will have to attend alcohol abuse sessions, will lose his license for a year, and will pay $500 in court costs.

Frawley made no comment during or after the four-minute hearing in Fredericksburg General District Court.

The university's governing board fired Frawley April 30th after he was charged with drunken driving for separate incidents on consecutive days in Fairfax County and Fredericksburg.

According to a police report, the former university president told authorities he had consumed six bottles of cough medicine on the day of his arrest in Fredericksburg.
