After weeks of speculation, the Charlottesville Ice Park deal is finally completed.
W. Mark Brown, a University of Virginia graduate, purchased the facility from its former owners Friday for approximately $3 million. Brown said following renovations, the complex should be open on Sept. 15.
The deal comes with a rebranding of the ice park, which will now be known as the Main Street Arena. The arena will allow for winter and summer sports, day camps, and special events throughout the year.
Plans are to offer an ice rink for six months of the year, from October through March, and a turf field for the remainder of the year. Visitors to the arena will now be able to take part in both winter and summer sports programs, from public ice skating to indoor soccer and lacrosse.
Brown said he plans on hosting many special events at the arena throughout the year, including weddings, concerts and trade shows.
The Charlottesville Ice Park initially closed at the end of June, when the previous owners, Roberta and Bruce Williamson, said they could no longer afford to keep the rink open. There was much outcry following the closure, as many people who practiced hockey or figure skating at the park did not have other nearby options.
The 25,000-square-foot facility sits on the west end of the Downtown Mall in Charlottesville.
