Performers from Ash Lawn Opera's Don Giovanni and Brigadoon gave Whole Foods shoppers in Albemarle County quite a surprise. The singers, dressed as Whole Foods workers, broke out in song during a flash performance in the produce section Thursday afternoon.
"They had aprons and name tags on, and we surprised the shoppers. Looking around at their faces, it looks like they had a really good time," said Ash Lawn Opera Director, Michelle Krisel.
The singers say they want to spread the word about Ash Lawn, and share their love of opera.
"I think it's a really wonderful way to break down the barriers that are traditionally associated with opera," said performer Tanya Roberts.
The tactics seemed to work well at Whole Foods Thursday, as everyone in attendance gave the unusual performance rave reviews.
"The minute I heard that music, I knew what it was. It was just a delight," said one shopper.
"I thought it was great and really funny because it was so unexpected," added another shopper.
The shows have run throughout July at the Paramount Theater on the Downtown Mall, and there will be two more performances this weekend. You can find show and ticket information on the Ash Lawn Opera website.

I wouldn't have minded that tenor so much -- he had a nice voice, but those wailing sopranos would have grated on my nerves.
That was awesome. I wish I had been there.
