According to Lake Monticello officials, an overflow from a manhole is to blame for the closing of Beach 5 in the community. Aqua Virginia says the overflow was caused by a blockage in the system, and raw sewage from the flow contaminated lake water and a nearby stream.

Routine water quality testing performed by the Lake Preservation Committee showed bacteria levels at the beach exceeded state standards for safe swimming. While Lake Monticello officials say Aqua Virginia has cleaned up the mess, things were not quite back to normal Thursday afternoon, which is why the beach remained closed.

Signs and barricades were posted to warn residents of the dangerous swimming conditions.

Residents are left to wait for normal water quality levels to return before taking a dip, but some say they're concerned the problem will not be contained to the Beach #5 area.

"It's water, so if it's at Beach 5 [Thursday], where's it going to be tomorrow? Even if there's no more that goes into the lake, where's it going to be tomorrow? We need to take care of it," said Chris Williams.

Lake officials say the problem is now out of their hands. Any residents with questions are instructed to call Aqua Virginia at 877-987-2782.

It seems like this happens two or three times a year with raw sewage being released back into the lake. Why hasn't this problem been fixed by Aqua VA? Why hasn't the LMOA board of directors confronted Aqua VA? What is the LMOA board of directors waiting for? It seems like that after Aqua VA took over the water and sewer system and DOUBLED the bill, we have had nothing but problems. As far as the comment made by the lake officials - "Lake officials say the problem is out of their hands" Well, who the h*ll owns the lake? Sounds like Aqua VA has a controlling interest in the lake. LMOA BOD, get off of your a@s and do something about this problem and forget about a community fishing pier!!!

disgusting....everytime we go to the lake to swim my kids get sick....after a few times we realized it must be the lake water...our lake excursions ended quickly...would rather pay to swim at the pool!! so what are the advantages of living at "the lake"??? poop in the water -you can't swim, water you can't drink, high water bills, dues and you still have pot-holes in your roads, and you still have to pay to swim at the pool like everyone else!!! LOL!! I call that prestigous!!!!

This has been an ongoing problem at Lake Monticello. I wouldn't swim in that lake or drink the water!
