Sullivan Begins Search for UVa Cabinet Successors

August 2, 2010

The University of Virginia's new president is getting settled in her new office in Madison Hall, and she already has a busy agenda.

Teresa Sullivan officially moved into her home on Carr's Hill over the weekend. A moving fan decorated with Cavalier Football logos made the trek from Ann Arbor, Mich., where Sullivan used to live.

Sullivan's plans for the first few weeks include a meeting with Gov. Bob McDonnell and delivering a welcome address on Aug. 21 during move-in weekend.

Sullivan sent a welcome message to students this weekend upon her arrival.

"One thing that makes the University of Virginia so special is the great teamwork that is exhibited every day in order to offer such an extraordinary education to our students," the letter said. "Let's work hard to sustain that tradition as we prepare for the fall semester."

On Sullivan's to-do list is finding a new chief operating officer and provost for the university. Executive vice president and COO Leonard Sandridge announced plans to retire in December 2010, but as agreed to remain in his post until, at least, June 2011. He will also serve an additional year as a special counselor to Sullivan.

Tim Garson, the executive vice president and provost, is also leaving in June 2011 to become senior vice president for health policy and health systems at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. He'll also be the director of the New York-based Dreyfus Health Foundation.

Sullivan said she intends to launch the provost search in 2011 after the COO search is underway or completed.

Sullivan was named the new president of UVa. in January. She replaces John Casteen, who served as president for two decades.
