Thousands of people across Central Virginia were without power for days after a snow storm buried the area Wednesday after some places saw more than a foot of snow.
The heavy snow caused trees to snap, bringing down power lines. As of Sunday night, Rappahannock Electric Cooperative reported some 2,000 customers still did not have power. Central Virginia Electric Cooperative also reported high numbers, upward of 1,700, while Dominion Virginia Power had it down to less than 20.
The power outages left thousands of Virginians in the dark. It also forced people to throw away spoiled food.
"You just want to cry. Your stomach turns when your looking at garbage bag, that's two or three garbage bags later you're filling up with food," said Louisa County resident Kimberly Kelly.
Kelly only had her power was restored Sunday night. She said she knew that crews were working on power restoration, but when she called Central Virginia Electric Cooperative to get specifics, they couldn't provided her with answers.
"Honestly, I was starting to feel like a stalker at a certain point. Every time we would call them, we wouldn't really get a straight answer. And all we wanted to know was, 'Are you in our area?' said Kelly.
Kelly and her family say they're happy to have power. She says she plans to talk with the power company to see if there's any system in place to help with food recovery cost. She calls the ordeal financially devastating.
