AATF Hopes to Diversify Teaching Staff at Local Schools

October 4, 2013

The African American Teaching Fellows (AATF) organization is trying to make the teachers ranks more diverse in Charlottesville and Albemarle County. And they are doing so with a fundraiser dinner.

Dozens of local businesses are getting involved with the October 11th event. Edgecomb’s Auto is one of the sponsors and hopes to raise money for scholarships going towards African American Education majors at UVa.

There are over 2,000 teachers in the Charlottesville and Albemarle Co. School System and less than 150 of them are African American.

The Edgecomb’s Auto owner hopes that with their help, those numbers can change for the better.

“We feel that education is something that benefits everyone and the African American Teaching fellows is all about bring excellence into our public schools,” say Sherri Edgecomb, owner of Edgecomb’s Auto.

“Having a diverse group of teachers is part of preparing them [students] to thrive in the diverse world,” says Scott Guggenheimer, director of AATF. “The money we are able to raise in 2013 will be sufficient to fund five full scholarships in 2014.”

Some of the businesses sponsoring the Fall Fundraiser, including Edgecomb’s Auto, CenturyLink, Wells Fargo and Virginia National Bank.
