Hundreds of people will be walking and running through downtown Charlottesville on Saturday, all to raise money and awareness for people living with HIV and AIDS.

The Charlottesville AIDS/HIV Services Group (ASG) is holding their 16th Annual AIDS Walk at the nTelos Wireless Pavilion on Oct. 5th.

Over 300 walkers have registered for the event, which raised $50,000 last year. The group hopes to raise $25,000 from this year's event.

Organizers say, in light of the government shutdown, it's very important for community members to support local organizations, because federal funding is in question.

"We can't depend on D.C. or even Richmond to solve the local problems for people living with HIV or AIDS,” says CEO Peter Demartino of ASG. “It really is up to us to come out and make sure that we're supporting the programs that are keeping our friends and neighbors alive."
