Appalachian Power is seeking state approval to upgrade a 36-mile section of transmission line in Botetourt and Rockbridge counties.
The company plans to replace all of the 500-kilovolt Cloverdale-Lexington line's wires. About 12 towers will be replaced or added.
Appalachian Power says it filed an application for the $36 million project on Thursday with the Virginia State Corporation Commission.
The company says the improvements are needed to ensure adequate and reliable electric service.
