UPDATE: Police Determine Stranger that Approached Student Isn't Dangerous

May 23, 2013

Albemarle County Police report a man fitting the description of person approaching kids in the Keswick area stopped by the police department to talk to officers.

His description and his vehicle description matched those given to police by students and parents in the area. Police say he is a college student here from Texas with a group of three other individuals.

They work for Southwestern Advantage and sell educational books. According to police, the group is properly licensed to solicit in Albemarle County.
Albemarle County school officials are warning parents and guardians of a suspicious incident.

On Wednesday, a student was walking home after getting off a school bus when he says he was approached by a man.

According to school officials, the man parked a Chevrolet HHR Wagon with Texas license plates in the driveway of the student’s home, and began asking the boy about other children that may live in that neighborhood.

Officials say they learned the man had also knocked on doors of other houses in the Keswick area with a similar story—wanting to get to know families with children.

The student’s parents notified the police.

The man is described as white, in his late 20s or 30s, about 5’ 11,” with a scruffy beard, brown hair (but balding), and carrying a sort of brief case. At one house he even attempted to flash some sort of badge or ID.

School officials are asking parents to discuss safety plans with their child on how to handle any strange occurrences that could happen when traveling to and from school.

If any student/family has information about this incident (or any other unusual occurrence at a bus stop), please notify the police immediately.
