African-American Cultural Arts Festival Celebrates 23 Years

July 28, 2012

The African-American Cultural Arts Festival took place at Washington Park Saturday, celebrating its 23rd year.

Organizers call it a one-of-a-kind event, being the only African-American festival in Charlottesville. Delegates from Charlottesville's sister city in Winneba, Ghana, made an appearance with Mayor Satyendra Huja.

Washington Park was transformed into a village featuring a number of vendors offering clothing, jewelry, books and plenty of food.

"It's just a wonderful day for a family to be together and to enjoy each other and just spread the African culture," event co-chair Lillie Williams said.

Organizers say it's a financial struggle for the nonprofit to put the festival on every year, but they say it's worth seeing the community come together.
