Albemarle County residents had the chance to hear their candidates' positions, particularly on environmental issues.

Candidates for the Albemarle County Board of Supervisors squared off at a candidate forum on environmental issues.

The Sierra Club organized the event, which took place in Charlottesville Monday night. People could listen to candidates talk about several questions and ask their own through notecards read outloud by a moderator.

Candidates discussed stormwater runoff, the 29 Bypass, climate change, solid waste and recycling, protecting the Rivanna River, their environmental priorities, and other environmental issues.

"We did a City Council forum back in...the Spring before the primaries and we thought that it was really successful. It brought together a lot of the enviornmental community with the opportunity to really hear the candidates speak about their positions. Whereas, when we do endorsements, we just have them fill out questionaires, so it's nice to have them speaking in public and it gets their environmental positions out to a broader public. And, so, we thought we'd do it again with the Board of Supervisors," said Jessica Gephart, Political Chair for the Sierra Club Piedmont Group and moderator for the forum.

The forum was co-sponsored by 350 Central Virginia, 350 UVa, Advocates for a Sustainable Albemarle Population, Appalachian Voices, Better World Betty, Community Bikes, EcoFair Committee, Healthy Food Coalition, League of Women Voters, Living Energy Farm, Rivanna Conservation Society, Slow Food at UVa, Transition Charlottesville-Albemarle, and Virginia Organizing.

If you didn't make it out tonight, you have another chance this week.

The Jefferson Area Tea Party will host back-to-back forums for Albemarle Board of Supervisors and Charlottesville City Council Candidates on Thursday night at the Albemarle County Office Building. It will last from 6-8 p.m.
