Albemarle Co. School Board Dealing with Budget Deficit

Feb. 5, 2014

With Albemarle County schools facing a $6.7 million budget shortfall, school board members are considering cutting some programs to help minimize the deficit.

At Tuesday night's meeting, the board decided to accept Superintendent Pam Moran's funding request; that includes over $600,000 in restorations and funds dedicated to new educational program initiatives. It'll be roughly two weeks before the amount of the funds from the state are determined.

The budget shortfall is threatening class sizes, cuts to programs like the swimming and diving team, and about 66 jobs.

Last night the board decided not to eliminate the swim and dive program, but instead consider raising athletic participation fees.

"We would rather discuss raising of athletic fees before we eliminate programs,” Albemarle Co. School Board Chairman Ned Gallaway said. “And then other board members have asked to see other information about other athletic programs as well so we're not just singling in on one particular program."

The Albemarle Co. School Board will have another work session on Thursday, Feb. 6th.

The next opportunity for public comment is at the school board meeting for Friday, Feb. 14th.
