Albemarle Co. School Board Seeks to Close $1.2 Million Budget Gap

March 11, 2013

The Albemarle County School Board saw a $1.2 million dollar gap in their funding as of February of this year.

In their presentation this morning they discussed how they would drive the budget through funding increases that will meet their growth mandates as well as fulfilling minimum requirements.

Currently the county is spending a thousand dollars less per student this year than in the 2008-2009 budgets.

The Albemarle County School Superintendent and the Board Chair spoke about the future of schools as well as things that could see cuts.

“Looking forward to the addition of an elementary world languages program at some point in the future,” says Dr. Pamela Moran, Superintendent. “There is also focus of moving to one-on-one technologies at some point in the future to better support our kids getting access to what we might consider 21st century learning.”

“Now unfortunately if we do have to make cuts it will be in the classroom” says board chair Stephen Koleszar. “I think we will have to do some small amount of increase in class size.”

There could also be a reduction in personnel and cuts to other programs and services.
In order to help close that gap, the school board asked supervisors to partially equalize the tax rate update the current year revenue forecast and allocate additional revenues to the school division.
