Albemarle Co. Service Authority Announces a Decrease in Water Rates

March 22, 2013

Residents in Albemarle Co. could soon see a decrease in their water bill.

The Albemarle County Service Authority (ACSA) announced that there will be a 1% decrease in water rates for the next fiscal year.

The lower rates are due to a decrease in the wholesale rates charged by the Rivanna Water and Sewer Company (RWSC).

The RWSC currently charges the service authority $3.46 per 1000 gallons of water. Next year that price will drop down to $3.33.

"Our rates are based on people's use, but for the average customer the rate decreased," says Gary O'Connell, executive director for the ACSA. "That's pretty unusual in the utility business. In recent years I'm not aware of when we've had a rate decrease."

The average customer uses about 3,600 gallons of water per month.
