The Albemarle County School Board okayed next year's budget.

The board adopted a final budget of $155.3 million, a slight reduction of less than a half a percent from an earlier draft.

The board reduced expenses by hiring about 35 new people instead of 40, doing more in house work on virtual classes, and taking into account more energy savings.

Also, the Board of Supervisors increased funding, reducing the deficit by about $800,000. Josh Davis, Albemarle County Public Schools Chief Operating Officer, was grateful that the Board's funding made balancing the budget easier.

"We were grateful to the Board of Supervisors for increasing the revenues to the school division. That cut our deficit from $1.2 million to $600,000. So, it made our decisions a bit more modest and easier tonight," said Davis. "We appreciate the support of the public for our schools and we know that we have the resources next year to educate our students to the Albemarle County standard of excellence."

The biggest discussion Thursday night was on how to carry forward staffing on reduced lunch programs in the future. School staff will study this over the summer.
