The Albemarle County Sheriff's Banquet thanked its extra help and accepted a gift, both of which keep the county safer, for free.
The annual dinner and awards thanked the Sheriff's Reserve Volunteer Division and staff for giving their time and work.
In addition, the night was the debut of a $25,000 pickup truck donated by Albemarle County resident Allen Powell, CEO of S&N Communications. The truck will pull the new Mobile Command trailer, giving the sheriff's office a flexible edge without hurting taxpayers.
"They're ready, so when we get ready for a search and rescue in Albemarle, our volunteers can just pull right up and jump in that truck and go, and all the equipment we need for a search is available: computer equipment, printing equipment, and our radio systems with extra antennas and so forth, all mounted along with some wide screen TVs," said Albemarle County Sheriff Chip Harding.
The Albemarle County Sheriff's Office Foundation had raised the money for the 32' command trailer by holding two golfing fundraisers.
Greene County Sheriff Steve Smith was the guest speaker. Smith had worked with the the Albemarle County Sheriff's Office for eight years prior to becoming Greene's sheriff.
The award for Reserve Deputy of the Year for 2013 went to James Sandridge.
The Sheriff's Reserve Volunteer Division donated more than 20,000 hours of help to the Sheriff's Office during the year. It is the largest in Virginia.
