Albemarle County Supervisor Anne Mallek talked with members of her district on Tuesday night.

Mallek, supervisor of the White Hall District, held a town hall at the Crozet library.

Topics included solid waste, courthouse expansion, and library funds. Police spoke about how community policing is going. A big topic on Tuesday was the possible tax hike.

"I think the budget is what's on people's minds right now because a five cent gap to meet the full funding for the schools is a really big chunk of change, hundreds of dollars for your average homeowner if we approve the full amount. The staff, of course, has proposed in the county executive's budget a 1.7 cent increase," said Mallek.

Mallek explained that proposed 1.7 increase would still keep the cost below the 2009 level, or within the range of where the tax bill has been for the last four or five years.

"It's so important for me to get out and meet face to face with as many citizens as I can," said Mallek. "Going to the place where they live is one of the signs of respect and interest that I have that tells them that it's really important to me. I know that our citizens have the solutions to our problems and we just need to be listening carefully."

If you would like to attend a town hall, there are two more meetings. The first is is at 7 p.m. Wednesday night at the Earlysville Volunteer Fire Company. The second is Saturday, March 8, at 10 a.m., at the White Hall Community Center.
