Albemarle County Police teamed up with Martha Jefferson Hospital for the National Prescription Drug Take Back Initiative.

Pounds upon pounds of old or unwanted prescription drugs were dropped off at three hospital locations on Saturday.

People were able to drop off bags in a drive-thru style to throw out the drugs they didn't need anymore or never even opened.

"We don't want these narcotics getting into the sewers and we also don't want kids to see them in the trash can at home and saying 'Hey what's this?' or with animals around at home, too. So this is really about safely disposing old narcotics," said Sgt. Steve Wilkins of the Albemarle County Police Department.

Last year the county and hospital reported more than 600 pounds of prescription drugs collected.
