Albemarle County to Discuss Multi-Uses For Yancey Elementary

B.F. Yancey Elementary school is not a stranger in the conversation of school closures. Public support in the community is firmly behind keeping the school open.

Albemarle school and county leaders will meet Wednesday to see if a committee is needed to evaluate possible additional uses for Yancey.

"The thought is to have the facility also house other social organizations like the Jefferson Area board of Aging or Services for Children Youth and Families," said school board member Eric Strucko.

A multi-use facility could mean more dollars for the school, but school leaders say they don't want this to be a gateway to get rid of the school.

"I want to make sure that these other uses don't diminish Yancey Elementary as a facility to keep going as an elementary school," Strucko said.

A capital improvement project would repair the air system, roofing and septic system at the school. People worry that the fixes are being made for a possible selling later on.

"I do think that the Albemarle County has made a commitment to the Esmont commitment community that Yancey will be their elementary school," Strucko said.

Community members hope the school will be around to serve for many more years.
