Albemarle County Police used a new traffic enforcement initiative Monday to catch speeders and make sure drivers are obeying an often overlooked law.

Officers crouched inside what appeared to be a stalled van at Route 250 and Fontaine Avenue to catch speeders and enforce the "Move Over" law.

"We are seeing a fair amount of speeders. I think that it is picking up some, which is a big troubling for us," said Sgt. Darrell Byers.

Police used a special tool called a LIDAR (Light Detection and Ranging), a police laser that uses a highly focused beam of invisible light to track a vehicle's speed. Police look through the viewfinder and place a red dot on the front of a vehicle - coming or going - and within seconds the apparatus returns a speed reading.

"We're seeing some vehicles in the 70s and the 80s, especially as people approach the I-64 interchange," said Sgt. Sean Hackney.

Not only do police want you to pay attention to your speed, they also want you to adhere to the Move Over law. It requires that drivers change lanes away from a stationary vehicle that's displaying flashing or blinking lights. If it's not safe to move over, you are required to slow down as you pass.

The "Move Over" law was amended in 2010 to include not just red and blue lights, but also flashing amber lights for construction workers and tow truck drivers.

Here is a little education for you. VA CODE 46.2-882 Determining speed with various devices; certificate as to accuracy of device; arrest without warrant. (A PORTION OF THAT CODE BELOW) The driver of any such motor vehicle may be arrested without a warrant under this section if the arresting officer is in uniform and displays his badge of authority and if the officer has observed the registration of the speed of such motor vehicle by the laser speed determination device, radar, or microcomputer device as described in this section, or has received a radio message from the officer who observed the speed of the motor vehicle registered by the laser speed determination device, radar, or microcomputer device as described in this section. However, in case of an arrest based on such a message, such radio message shall have been dispatched immediately after the speed of the motor vehicle was registered and furnished the license number or other positive identification of the vehicle and the registered speed to the arresting officer.

It is nice to see someone actually say something positive about the police and to see their efforts for what they truely are. If Albemarle county had 21 homicides last year what would everyone do? We had 21 fatality accidents last year. Shouldn't the police do something about it? Everyone talks about using thier tax money. Looks like the police are doing the job you pay them for. They are trying to prevent another fatality. Wake up people and get your head's out of the sand!! Thank you to the officers that do their jobs each and every day and have to listen to people similar to the ones that comment here complain when they get pulled over!
