A commemoration of history and freedom wrapped up on Saturday evening at Piedmont Virginia Community College.

The annual Juneteenth Event featured lots of entertainment. There was a puppet show, a reenactment of the slave trade known as the Middle Passage, plus food and trinkets for the kids.

More than 100 people stopped by the event Saturday after opening up Friday night.

For one family, going to the event was to learn how freedom came about.

"I wanted my grandchildren to know we weren't always free," said Andrea Williams, who brought her three granddaughters. "Just seeing the reenactment of some of the things, the dresses, the clothes, the art. You know, just how far things have come and it just takes you back a minute to appreciate where we are now."

Virginia is one of 30 states to celebrate Juneteenth.
