Annual Memorial Illumination Celebrates Life

December 10, 2013

It was a celebration of life at Aldersgate United Methodist Church on Tuesday night.

That's where the Hospice of the Piedmont held its 22nd Annual Memorial Illumination. The event featured songs, speakers and a children's processional.

Organizers say it's a time at the end of each year to reflect on the lives of loved ones lost, together.

"Grief and death are universal things, and it's really nice to come together and feel that sense of community as you're grieving the loss," said Rachael Palm, communications director for the Hospice of the Piedmont. "We find that's a really great way to memorialize people's lives and to feel a sense of community that helps to lift people out of their grief."

Hundreds of luminaries were scattered around the church. Each one commemorated a life lost.

The Hospice of the Piedmont hosts another vigil in the spring.
