In January, the Salvation Army of Charlottesville was presented with a unique opportunity from an anonymous donor – raise $50,000 for the programs and services of the local chapter of the Salvation Army and receive a match of $50,000.
The condition of the matching gift is that the funds must be raised by May 15th.
The chapter on Ridge Street operates a homeless shelter and soup kitchen every day. Every night, more than 75 men, women and children utilize the shelter program. In 2013, volunteers and staff served more than 48,000 meals. They also have a thrift store on Cherry Avenue.
Salvation Army Officers say the extra funds will help them maintain their high quality of service for people in need.
"Anybody giving anymore wants to make sure, you know, what can they do with their dollar, and we're trying to give them the best bang for their dollar,” Major Allen Johnson said. “So if you can give us a dollar and we can get a dollar to match your dollar, that's great."
When you donate, you must specify that your gift is part of the Charlottesville match program.
Gifts should be marked CHARLOTTESVILLE MATCH and sent to 207 Ridge Street, Charlottesville, Va. 22902.
Additionally, the Family Store accepts donations at it Cherry Avenue retail location.
Call the local chapter of the Salvation Army at (434) 295-4058 if you have any questions.
