Another candidate has officially entered the race for an at-large seat on Charlottesville's City Council. On Thursday, Brandon Collins submitted the "Statement of Organization for a Candidate" to the Charlottesville Electoral Board, along with his "Candidate Qualification" form.

The statement of organization is required for all candidates to receive donations, and to report donations and expenditures.

Collins is active in peace and social justice issues. He serves on the board of the Charlottesville Center for Peace and Justice and is the Secretary of the Socialist Party of Central Virginia.

He will be running as an independent and says his campaign will be based on bringing a more radical approach to local government.

Collins says his decision to run was based on encouragement from friends and fellow activists, and from attending many city council meetings where he felt he would vote much differently than other councilors on a number of issues.

The official declaration of candidacy paperwork alongside with 125 signatures still need to be filed by Collins, but he says that won't take long.

The only "peace issue" that Charlottesville has is crime and I wager we won't hear a peep from him as to how he will expand the police force and give it new equipment and training. Our biggest "social issue" is that most of the city lives off of welfare and public assistance and I won't hold my breath waiting for him to talk about what is needed to solve this embarrassment.

If you read his platform it sounds as if he wants to live in San Francisco. I will help pack the U-Haul, hell I will pay for the U-haul. It will be cheaper than all his new initiatives. Those of us that work for those evil for-profit companies pay enough for public housing gardens and reusable shopping bags placed in Albemarle County stores and "Sister" city trips for the local officials. This guy better avoid my door when collecting signatures.

This guy needs to run on the "Undiscovered Treasure" ticket. He would be a landslide winner since the petty criminals, sex offenders and public assistance crowd far outnumber those that work and pay taxes. He could use the Haven as party headquarters.
