There was a line outside the door at the Paramount Theater on the Downtown Mall Saturday as the Ash Lawn Opera expanded its performances to the winter.
The group performed the holiday classic Amahl and the Night Visitors. It's the first time the opera is performing beyond its summer schedule.
Singers ranged from local talent, including about 20 children, to the Metropolitan Opera.
"The crowd is unbelievable," opera director Michelle Krisel said. "We took a chance expanding. We weren't sure how many people would come, and weeks ago, we sold out. So we have two sold out performances and you see all ages and people from all types of communities."
Tickets were sold out for both Saturday performances.
The opera will be back in summer 2013, and organizers say they plan to start holding more winter performances in the future.
