Ash Lawn-Highland celebrated Valentine's Day and President James Monroe's wedding anniversary on Sunday afternoon.

The 226th wedding anniversary of President Monroe and First Lady Elizabeth is Feb. 16. To celebrate organizers hosted a tea party.

About 20 guests participated in early 19th century activities. They drank tea and ate homemade scones, learned the proper way to hold a fan and even did an activity with paper and quills.

Organizers say the hands-on history lessons help people to remember the traditions.

"Guests can pull something away even more from that, versus just hearing an interpreter tell them about it. They can be part of something that could have easily been seen or taken place then," said Mandi Dean.

Guests also learned how tea was served in the early 1800s. It came over from England in a block and then pieces were shaved into a cup and hot water was added.
