Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli is warning Virginians to be cautious of a new scam disguised as a sweepstakes.
Cuccinelli says the scammers send out realistic-looking checks in the mail, claiming the recipient has won a large amount of money. They are given instructions to deposit the check and send back a portion of the money to claim the rest of the winnings.
People who deposit the check find out it is fake, and are forced to reimburse the bank for the funds.
