The National Park Service is investigating what caused a young teenager to fall onto the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Sources tell Newsplex partner Blue Ridge Life magazine the teenager fell 60 feet onto the parkway near Mile Post 9 and the Greenstone Overlook in Augusta County.

"It was a very, very serious fall involving a young teenager that fell approximately 60 feet down onto the parkway,” Chief Curtis Sheets of the Wintergreen Fire Department told Blue Ridge Life magazine Sunday evening.

The Pegasus helicopter took the victim to the University of Virginia Medical Center.

The park service closed the road for a number of hours Sunday afternoon to investigate.
