In just three months, former Virginia golfer Ben Kohles has gone from
UVa. to the PGA.
"It's definitely been a whirlwind. It feels like it's been a year, but only been a few months," said Kohles. "The last month has been pretty crazy."
Kohles turned pro shortly after graduating from the University of Virginia. in May. In July, he surprised a lot of people when he won the Nationwide Children's hospital Invitational, his Web.Com Tour debut. He became the first golfer to ever win in his first outing.
"Obviously, that's something you want to do, but no one's really done
before, so I'm just very fortunate," saidk Kohles.
He followed his first win up with another win the next weekend, at the Cox Classic in Omaha, Nebraska. He is the first golfer to ever win in his first two professional outings.
In the whirlwind few months that he's had, Kohles points to the Cox
Classic as one of the best moments.
"The second win, definitely the last round, I think that was the best round I've ever played. To do that on Sunday was really special," said Kohles.
After the win in Omaha, Kohles was invited to the Wyndham Championship on a sponsor's exemption, for his first PGA Tour event.
Not only did he make his PGA Tour debut just months after graduating
from UVa., he did it in his home state. Kohles grew up in Cary, North
Carolina, which is just about an hour east of Greensboro, where the
Wyndham Championship was played.
Kohles was able to enjoy the comforts of home while playing at
Wyndham. He says leading up to the tournament, he was also able to
enjoy the comfort and support from another place he called home, the
University of Virginia.
"I've talked to a bunch of people that I've gotten to know over the four years I spent there," he said. "It's been great and they've shown a lot of support."
Just months ago, he was receiving a diploma. Soon, he'll be receiving
a PGA Tour card. Even though he's been accomplishing things nobody
else has before him, he says it all hasn't really sunk in just yet.
"I haven't had much time to think about it, which i think is a good
thing. Obviously, I know there are tons of golfers trying to make it
out here, and what I've been able to do takes a lot of the variables
out of play," said Kholes.
