Better Mental Health System May Prevent Future Mass Shootings

December 20, 2012

Addressing only gun policy is not the answer according to University of Virginia Clinical Psychologist, Dewey Cornell. He is one of nine school safety researchers who released a statement on the mass shooting in Newtown, Connecticut.

Cornell says guns are a very important issue but it's not the only one. He says the only way to prevent another shooting from happening is to finally confront the mental health issue.

He says with each mass shooting, we find out there were multiple places where someone could've intervened if the resources were available. In other words preventing a possible gunman from even having those violent thoughts.

However, Cornell says those types of resources for the mentally troubled need to be taken seriously and implemented.

"Many family members in this country have a family member who suffers from mental problems, emotional problems, adjustment problems and looking for a place to help a place that can provide services to them. Unfortunately in Virginia we've allowed our mental health services to wither away after years and years of budget cuts."

Cornell adds that with mental health issues being one of the most consistent problems behind the shootings we've seen that it's time to bring the conversation towards mental health and away from school security and guns.
