Mark Maund is pedaling across the country in honor of the human spirit. Friday, he made a special stop in Charlottesville.

The 1,500 mile Tour for Tuscaloosa will culminate in Tuscaloosa, AL with a home rebuilding project to help tornado victims.

Maund rides every year in honor of his friend, Betty Ong, who was a stewardess on American Airlines Flight 11, one of two planes hijacked and crashed into the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. Maund and Ong first met in 1987 while she worked for Delta Airlines and he was stationed in San Diego on-board the USS Kitty Hawk.

He started his trip at Ground Zero in New York City nearly two months ago.

"I've been met by people who lost friends or relatives on 9/11, and to see how wide spread it was; it wasn't just contained in the New York or D.C. areas," Maund explained.

An avid cyclist, Maund has completed extensive biking tours, including cross-country rides, regional rides and, most notably, a 15,000 mile perimeter tour of the United States of America.

Wonder how long he's been living off the kindness of strangers and the gullibility of the small town press, instead of working at a real job. Better than his other option, pan-handling with the non-cycling homeless.
