RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Black business owners want a share of an $84 million construction project at Virginia State University.

The university plans to break ground in December for a multipurpose facility that will include a wellness center, basketball, volleyball and meeting space.

The Richmond Times-Dispatch reports that about a half-dozen representatives from the Black Business Alliance attended a presentation on the project during the university board of visitors meeting on Thursday.

Board rules requiring advance notification for public comment prevented the group from addressing the board. Alliance president A. Hugo Bowers told the newspaper that he was encouraged by private conversations after the meeting.

He says the historically black university could be doing more for black businesses.
