"Bowl for Kids' Sake" Draws Big Crowd, Big Names

Kegler's Lanes in Charlottesville was a busy place Thursday night. Every lane was filled with with participants in this year's Bowl for Kids' Sake event, benefiting Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Central Blue Ridge.

"Big Brothers Big Sisters has 150 youngsters looking for matches. So there's definitely a need," said Dave Koehn. "And an event like this allows us the platform to let people know what the organization is all about."

Koehn's primary job is the play-by-play radio announcer for Virginia football and basketball. But he's also an active Big Brother for the past four years, with Little Brother Adrian.

All 48 lanes were sold out for Thursday night's event, with more than 300 people attending. Mingled throughout the crowd were several 'celebrity' bowlers, including former UVa basketball coach Pete Gillen.

"Any time you can help young people, the Big Brothers Big Sisters organization is tremendous," Gillen said. "They really need help with that, something that the young boys and girls can look up to. So I'm glad to help out in a small way. I'm not much of a bowler, but we're having fun and it's a great cause."

Other 'celebrity' guests included UVa athletic director Craig Littlepage, men's basketball coach Tony Bennett, women's basketball coach Joanne Boyle, and former UVa football players Perry Jones and Ahmad Hawkins.

"One of the things we pride ourselves on with this particular event is having fun," said Koehn. "And it's all having fun for a good cause, which is supporting so many youngsters in our area that are looking for a mentor, and need somebody to provide that guidance."
