Multiple law enforcement agencies respond to a Madison County business this morning for a standoff with an armed man.
Officials with the Virginia State Police say the standoff began around 7:30 a.m. Wednesday at Skyline Restoration on Route 29. A suspect identified as 42-year-old David Allen Cole entered the business with a firearm, firing several shots.
All the people in the business safely fled the building.
Cole pointed the firearm at his own throat when he was confronted by law enforcement on the scene.
Negotiators were able to get Cole to surrender without incident at 10:06 a.m. He is currently charged with reckless handling of a firearm, and an emergency custody order has been issued for an evaluation.
Law enforcement officers from Orange, Greene and Madison Counties responded, along with State Police.
Shots were fired, but there are no reports of injury.
Nearby schools were put on lockdown as precaution. Officials say no students were involved in the shooting.
Route 29 was closed for several hours in both directions in Madison Co. due to the standoff. The road was reopened shortly before 11 a.m.
