The Route 250 Bypass bridge is starting to take shape. Construction crews were working overnight to install eight steel girders that span the bridge.
While the work is being completed, between 7 p.m. Monday night and 6 a.m. Tuesday morning, all lanes underneath the bridge will be closed. Drivers staying straight on the bypass will not be affected, but those trying to turn on McIntire Road from the westbound bypass will need to take a detour, as will those trying to turn from McIntire Rd. onto the westbound bypass.
Wade Shifflett has managed this project from the beginning.
"It is very exciting," he said. "The public can see the bridge. When we get, you can see it."
Shifflett says some people were still unaware that a bridge was being built at the intersection.
"We've had people ask what those two structures are," he said. "They don't know it's a bridge until we put the beams on it."
Each one of the girders weighs about 20 tons. They were trucked in from Richmond on Monday. Monday night, the crews used a crane to carefully lift them into place and bolt them to the concrete walls.
"I've been driving through here for years and I think that this project's a great addition to the Charlottesville community," said Andy Jenkins. "This overpass that they have going on right now is going to minimize traffic and hopefully help with my commute to work."
Construction crews say the project is 75 percent completed, and getting the girders in place is a big step toward the end. The intersection is scheduled to be completed by the summer of 2015 at the latest.
"The project in my opinion is ahead of schedule," Shifflett said. "If things keep going like they're going, we'll open this thing early."
