CAT Clarifies Night Schedules, says More Changes Coming

Jan. 16, 2014

On January 4th, Charlottesville Area Transit (CAT) made major changes to its bus service, resulting in the confusion for many riders. Two weeks at after the launch, CAT officials want to clarify those changes.

Transit manager John Jones wants CAT riders to know they get still get a ride at night. Although night routes 21, 22, and 23 are no longer on the schedule, they still exist, just under different route numbers. Daytime routes have been extended to the areas covered by nighttime buses, and most run until 11:45 p.m.

Jones says since the schedule change, night ridership has dropped 50 percent.

"This night issues came up really quickly. We realized it and we just feel that there is this misunderstanding out there, so we want to make sure that everybody realizes we have those routes out there," said Jones.

The changes launched in January may not be the end for CAT riders. Issues uncovered during this initial change, could mean more tweaks in the future.

"There have been problems. We know everything wasn't perfect," Jones said. "This isn't the be all and then end all. We will make changes, we will make it more convenient for you."

According to Jones one route that could be reinstated, and even extended, is service on Pantops.

"We've got some streets that we used to cover that we stopped covering and probably shouldn't have. We'll make another adjustment in the summer to get this service back for people," said Jones.

For now, Jones wants riders to take advantage of the routes they do have.

"Grab a schedule take a look, give us a call, check with the people downtown at the downtown transit center," Jones said. "We're running at night to serve you."
