CAT Rolls Out 3 New Trolleys

June 23, 2014

Starting this week, passengers will see new trolleys around the Downtown Mall and Grounds at the University of Virginia.

Charlottesville Area Transit (CAT) has introduced three new trolleys to their fleet of vehicles. Officials say the new trolleys will provide safe, reliable service to area residents, visitors, and students.

Each new trolley is a GILLIG (manufacturer) bus in disguise: The chassis, engine, transmission, A/C unit, passenger seats, and flooring are identical to over 75% of buses in CAT's fleet. The similarities will reduce the need to stock additional inventory and allow for faster turn-around times when the buses are off the road for regular maintenance.

Each trolley is equipped with an ADA ramp and two four point tie-down securement system allowing operators to carry up to two wheelchairs at a time.

All three trolleys will operate on the Free Trolley Route giving free rides all day, every day.
