Cancer Center Introduces New Surgery Procedure

February 13, 2013

A seven-year study on the new approach to pancreatic cancer surgery was released today.

Researchers at UVa. evaluated the safety of the study as well as its effectiveness. The new approach to the Whipple procedure helps people that have major cancer surgery recover faster.

Doctor Todd Bauer from Surgery and Oncology at UVa's cancer center spoke about the procedure.

"It's probably one of the most complex operations performed in this country and what we have done is paid particular attention to the details of the surgery and the recovery afterwards with the goal of getting the patient out of the hospital and back home and back to a good quality of life sooner."

The new approach to the surgery gets the patient out of the hospital in six days, rather than the 10 day to two week recovery time that is experienced at other hospitals around the nation that perform the procedure without the new clinical pathway.
