It was a day of celebration as many Christians gathered at churches around the area to rejoice and give praise for the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
For some the day started early, with sunrise services that lead into the afternoon.
“It’s full of church service and all the good things the lord has provided for us,” says Debra Williams of Charlottesville. “We go to 6 o'clock morning service and after that we have a fellowship breakfast, and then we come back to Charlottesville to be at First Baptist here for 8 o'clock and 10:30 service.”
For others, being with family was an important part of the day.
“It's just an awesome time to celebrate with your family and be close to your loved ones,” says Dr. Jesse Turner, principal at Monticello High School.
“Four of the kids are here,” says Charles Adams, Charlottesville resident. “We've got a couple off at college and a couple still at home so it's a time to be with family.”
“We always make a tradition to be at Easter service for Easter service.”
Many also spoke about their traditions for the holiday. Some include giving Easter speeches, dressing up in the best outfit and even enjoying a few Easter egg hunts.
But many Christians want people to know the real reason they celebrate Easter.
“That Jesus took away all my sin and that he died on the cross for my sin,” says six-year-old Katie Elise.
Easter also celebrates that He has risen.
