APPOMATTOX, Va. (AP) - Law enforcement officials in central Virginia netted more than 680 traffic violations as part of a nationwide traffic safety campaign.

On Tuesday, state troopers, police officers and sheriff's deputies conducted DUI checkpoints and roving patrols within 15 counties and six cities as part of the "Drive to Save Lives" campaign.

Officials say the 12-hour operation yielded 688 summonses and arrests, stopping 225 speeders and citing 48 seatbelt violators.

Another 15 child safety seat violations were cited along with 92 equipment violations. There was one DUI arrest.

Virginia State Police hope the campaign served as a wakeup call for motorists to drive to save lives every day by buckling up, complying with speed limits, and not driving distracted or impaired.
