As part of the City of Charlottesville's and Albemarle County Service Authority's (ACSA) ongoing efforts to promote water conservation in the community, a new car wash certification program has been developed. The program is voluntary for any area car washes.
To achieve certification, each car wash facility must meet certain criteria. Each car wash must use only a certain amount of water for each of its car wash options. Also, the facilities must repair leaks right away and use low-flow toilets.
"Residents have often asked about the most water efficient way to clean their cars. Certified car washes will have their per car water use directly measured and the results posted online," said City Water Conservation Coordinator Kaitlin Finan in the press release.
"Businesses have been eager for us to develop this program, because they want the public to be aware of steps they have taken to be water efficient," said Tim Brown, Environmental Compliance Specialist for the ACSA, in the press release. "The water customers in this area care about conservation."
A site will be created with the names of the certified businesses.
"We just want to tell customers where it is that they can get it washed," Brown said. "Where a facility has been certified, i.e. where they can go through a wash process where that facility has kept its usage under a cap that has been set."
