Charlottesville Apartment Complex Increases Its Energy Efficiency

June 27, 2013

Some Charlottesville residents are getting a lesson in energy efficiency.

The residents of the Midway Manor Apartment Complex participated in a light bulb exchange on Thursday.

The apartment complex just finished a $500,000 energy retrofit with help from LEAP, the Local Energy Alliance Program.

Each tenant had the opportunity to exchange one incandescent light bulb for a free energy-efficient CFL bulb. Switching to CFL bulbs will help increase the energy efficiency of the homes.

"To expand it to our rental units will greatly decrease our energy use and our water use as well as bring the benefits of lower utility costs and healthy homes to the community that most needs that help," said City Councilor Dede Smith.

Midway Manor's new retrofit includes new energy-efficient refrigerators, new A/C units, and new low-flow water fixtures.
