The Charlottesville Regional Chamber of Commerce is reaching out to Virginia's leaders in Congress, trying to spare the region from cuts to defense in our area.
In a letter, the chamber writes, in part: "Focused, efficient defense intelligence expenditures and deployment are far wiser investments than the much larger expenditures necessitated from the lack of adequate intelligence investment."
Chamber President Tim Hulbert says Central Virginia uses federal money efficiently.
"In addition to the advantage for the location alone and the lower cost of living here versus the national capital," said Hulbert, "we also have two very fine educational institutions which are able to provide the kinds of course training that these agencies and these enterprises need."
The chamber says the federal research money at the University of Virginia alone adds up to about $300 million every year.
