Charlottesville Groups Hold Forum on Syria

Sept. 5, 2013

It was standing-room only during a town hall forum in Charlottesville on how to prevent a U.S. attack on Syria.

Speakers included authors and experts on the Middle East and Syria. John Whitehead of the Rutherford institute and Charlottesville City Councilor Dave Norris were among those who spoke at the forum.

They are all pushing for a more transparent government.

"The U.S. shouldn't intervene militarily in Syria unless there is a full and open debate in Congress that the American people can be involved in," said Whitehead. "We haven't had that. It's mainly secret meetings and the president making statements. If we are fully informed, and there is a serious national security interest, but we haven't heard that."

The event was sponsored by Charlottesville Center for Peace and Justice, Amnesty International Charlottesville, and Students for Peace and Justice in Palestine.
