Local students will soon be able to take PE Class, wherever and whenever they want.

Charlottesville High School will offer Virtual PE as a new class. Instead of in the school gym, students may learn physical education fundamentals with activities of their choice, such as playing on a sports team..

Students wear a bracelet that logs their activities. The class meets Virginia requirements.

Students and parents like that this frees up a class for them.

"Our students and parents are really asking for flexibility. We have students that live such robust and rich lives and have so many interests outside a typical high school schedule that they were really interested in being able to take PE at their own time, on their own pace," said Stephanie Carter, Charlottesville High School Virtual Education Administrator.

"There are other classes that we might want to take, like AP Psych, or things like that, but now we have another free period to do that, or we can take another language or another art," said Stephanie Thrift, a 9th grader and Varsity lacrosse player at CHS. "Also, the PE class isn't that rigorous and I think practice here is a lot more challenging."

CHS requires two semesters of PE, one taken in 9th grade and one in 10th.

"We have so many offerings that kids really like to take advantage of anything they can do online outside of the regular school day so they can have a full, full schedule of things that they love to do," said Carter.

"I just think it's gonna be really good because we all do exercise outside of school so it'd be good to do that instead of having to take up an entire class or use up a lot of our summer doing gym," said Thrift.

The virtual education class will start this summer. CHS will offer two classes in its summer school.
