Charlottesville's Dialogue on Race hosted a discussion Saturday afternoon about Queen Charlotte, the city's namesake.

A panel discussed the monarch's ancestry at Charlottesville High School's MLK Performing Arts Center.

Mario Valdes, one of the panelists, explained his research where he found the queen came from Portuguese and African descent.

"We tended to think white is white and black is black and never the two shall come together because it was outlawed here in this country," Valdes said. "We talked about that it took me sometime to find out where her African ancestry came from."

Audience member said they were intrigued by the queen's personal history and surprised by her heritage.
