The Charlottesville Housing and Redevelopment Authority has until the end of the month to respond to a federal review that found nine serious violations of statute, regulations or practice.
Members of the Charlottesville Public Housing Association of Residents, PHAR, say they're not surprised by the review.
"It's not a surprise to anybody who's been paying attention to this housing authority for years," said PHAR organizer Brandon Collins.
In its report to the authority, HUD also expressed concerns about inexperienced and under-trained staff, overcharging some residents and undercharging others for rent, and high employee turnover. Community members say they aren't surprised by the report, especially when it comes to high turnover.
"We had a maintenance secretary that we don't have anymore.That position is still currently open, which causes maintenance issues," said public housing resident Latita Talbert.
She says residents have to leave a voice mail to put in maintenance requests.
CRHA responded to HUD'S claims by releasing a statement. "The Charlottesville Redevelopment and Housing Authority is taking the necessary corrective action to fall into compliance with HUD programs and regulations as laid out in 24 CFR and the recent HUD review," the statement read.
"I think this report shows quite clearly that there's mismanagement in the housing authority. We hope that they can fix some of that," said Collins.
